Decided to make the ALDL cable I have found here on Pennocks. The instructions only show how to wire it for a serial connector, and my computer only has usb. If I make one using the serial connector can I just buy one of this cheap serial to usb cables and still have it work correctly.

Some USB to serial adapters don't put out the full voltage of an standard RS232 connector and fail. Some seem to fail with the full voltage. People have had much more success with laptop based ports, however the are hard to come by these days.

Use the cable diagram that uses +12 from the Fiero as bias voltage.

My laptop works with a blue USB adapter on my Fiero. Don't forget the proper A-B resistor. Without it the Fiero data output port remains dark.

Some USB-serial ports can't send/receive non-standard baud rate either.
No, I don't know good bands/model..... Use search.
