can you purchase a "new" PROM chip?
I need one for my '86 5-spd holley duke.
And I would like to know if its possible to get them blank to send to someone for programming/tuning.

Yes you can buy new blank chips

Yes you can buy used chips. Yes you can get a chip custom programmed.

The Duke ECM uses a 2732 chip. Whoever does your programming should have a supply of them.

I'm pretty sure I have a bunch of them in phone equipment in my garage that can be blanked out btw.

I was thinking of sending some new buisiness over to sinister for the programming of some blank chips, but I would prefer to have an original that works.

What happened on my '86 Duke was that code 51 was flashing, so that has something to do with the PROM, I swiched one from an '84 4-spd in and got my car rolling, but I would like to have the right chip.

Put 86 PROM back and try again...
Reseat maybe fix it. (If you didn't bent/break pins.)

Not much, if any, tuning a 4 cyl especially a stock one.

You have a label on PROM? Order a new one with that code.
Good programmer know code means....

I tried re-seating the prom, and while it didnt flash a code for about 15 minutes the performance of the vehicle was noticeably hindered.

I was going to just order a progrmmed chip from sinister, but after I read, they dont sell the PROM chip they sell an EPROM chip.
am I wrong to think that is the only thing they sell?

Speaking strictly from an electronics standpoint, PROM = Programmable Read Only Memory. EPROM = Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory. EEPROM = Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory.

Typically, a "PROM" is a one-time programming deal, no way to erase it. EPROM is erasable, with UV light through a clear window on the chip. EEPROM is erased electrically, typically using a higher-than-chip voltage.

So if the chip is electrically compatible, an EPROM is fine, just means you can erase and re-program.

The chip that is in your stock ECM is an EPROM. Take a razor blade and pull up that sticker and you will see a window under it. If your chip has a window it is an EPROM. (They all do)

Ryan (Sinister) does know his stuff btw.
