I have a notchback Fiero and I am planning to redo (upgrade) the body. I don't want to do a complete fastback swap (I like notchies) but I was wondering if the fastback rear bumper cover fits a notchback Fiero as a bolt-on. Right now I have an '84 with the bumper pad style. I will also be installing a Formula style nose at some point (as finances permit).

It fits, but you'll need the impact absorber for sure, probably the rear well liner, and other bits. Oh, and the moldings will be different as the fastbacks had round moldings and the notchies pre-'87 had grooved moldings. Also, the ground effects molding won't match between the rest of the car and the rear cover.

84-86 coupe, use an 84 Indy, 85GT, 86-87SE rear fascia, as these will use the correct moldings. If you are doing this much, you might as well get the rest of the panels, as the rear fascia alone will look odd.

87-88 coupe, use the 86-88GT fasica.... but same issue with the odd look.

Oh, I see you are going with the formula fasica, then get an 88 coupe/formula rear fascia and then change over the side moldings. You will need to trim the wheel wells as the 84-86 vs 87-88 coupe uses a slightly different profile for the wheel well. The 88 coupe/formula rear fasica has the dual openings for a dual exhaust. 87 coupe only has one opening.

As you have an '84, the bumper pad cars have a unique upper mounting bar that slips under the taillights. It is unique for bumper pad cars, but the same for all other style bumpers that were used (aero notchback, aero coupe ['87-'88], and fastback GT).

As mentioned, what you actually need is the notchback ribbed bumpers. They are different than the fastback GT bumpers. They look the same at first glance, but you need to look at more photographs to determine the different. The fastback GT rear fascia has rounded moldings and a "GT" emblem on the lower right. On the ribbed molding cars ('84 indy, '85 GT, and '86 SE), the bumper has no GT markings but has 'PONTIAC' molded into the center of the fascia. It will look similar to what you have on your car now, but overall look like a GT fascia. If you attempt to use an actual fastback GT rear fascia you're going to run into the issue of the fascia not having the same molding.

Here's the fascia I'm talking about for notchbacks. Notice it looks like a GT fastback fascia, but it's not.

Here's the fastback GT fascia. See the difference?

They actually look near exactly the same at first glance, and are actually very close in overall shape, but there is differences.

Thanks, guys! That really clears up a lot of questions and gives me some different ideas. Jeez, for a car that was "the same" from '84 to '88 there sure are a lot of differences. I hadn't realized that the fastback GT and Indy rear bumpers were different for example.
