4.9 valve cover swap? by bristowb

I understand that you need to swap valve covers on the 4.9 (left to right right to left) when installing into a Fiero. I have one and getting ready to start my swap. I just want to know why. Is it for ease of oil fill? Clearance(Which shouldn't make a differance to me or am I missing something)?

It is all about the oil fill location. Swapping the valve covers puts the oil fill on the rear most valve cover vs. the front one.

Also the is a notch in the VC that allows for clearance of the Rear Deck lid hinge. That is why I swapped them. below shows the differences..

...except the notch doesn't help you with the decklid hinge - swapping move the notch to the 'rear' side, well away from the hinge - you can install the same oil fill cover on both sides which will give you any clearance you may need (not really too much of an issue) plus the ease of filling the oil.


bristowb >> best to swap the covers, if not you will have to use a funnel with a flex neck to fill your oil as there really is not enough clearance with the decklid there - just a suggestion - see picture:
