I'm having a crazy idea. I own 2 '87 GTs. One is a auto and the other has the getrag 5 speed. I love my auto (since it was my first Fiero) and have done a lot of work to the car. The other car with the manual I acquired later and love driving it, but hasn't had the care like my auto. I drove the cars till about 4 years ago, when i parked the cars. One stayed in the garage and collected dust (auto) and the other stayed outside and fought the weather day after day. Now the paint on it is horrible, the tail lights have cracked and delaminated badly, interior has taken a bad hit, and so on. So with having both cars I'm thinking and wondering how hard it might be to swap the transmissions and selling the one car, since I don't need both.

I've read a few posts of people doing this. My question is this. Does it make it any easier having both cars side by side doing to the swap? How much time would it take to do this swap? Should I even be considering this? With having both cars, is there any additional parts I would need (assuming nothing gets broken)?

Some of the things I know about the swap. Will have to change the pedals, the ecm, the auto transmission cooling lines, and linkages along with the transmissions.

Anyone living near or around Fresno, Ca wanna help with this?

Let me know how crazy I am. Thanks

Quite possible and you should have everything you need, assuming you have all of the tools as well.

However, doing the swap to both cars is going to be fairly time consuming and will depend on how quickly you work and how thorough your swap is. For instance, do you plan on swapping the wiring harnesses as well?. If you're used to doing this kind of work then I wouldn't worry about it and just go for it. However, if you're not, then this would be quite a substantial project to take up and you might want to reconsider. As you should know there are a lot of things to swap between the two. It's not a difficult swap but there is quite a bit to do.

Also, if it sounds daunting, consider other options. I'm not sure of how horrible the 87GT you want to get rid of is but consider that most of the things you listed that are wrong with it can be more easily swapped than the transmissions, particularly the tail-lights and interior. The body panels are more difficult but you might find that getting the car some fresh paint and swapping the easy things over is still worthwhile over swapping the transmissions...especially if neither of your cars have that great of paint to begin with.

It all depends on you and what you are up for.

I have done an auto to a stick. If you are selling the other crappy car I'm not sure it makes sense to put the crappy parts into the crappy car to sell. If the body is good maybe someone would buy it for an engine swap. Maybe sell the crappy car and buy an even crappier car or just the parts.

idk, I just don't know if I would have the motivation to put together a crappy car just to get some bucks from it.

I fully understand putting a man pedal in the good car however.

Thanks guys for the tips. After thinking really long and hard I think I will just skip the idea of swapping the transmissions. Going to sell my nice one and then put the money back into this one. Just need to find a buyer a now.
