3800 engines are externally balanced just like some 2.8's, and the external balance is different (weight). Also, all mid-90's and later 3800's have an 8-bolt flywheel to crankshaft mounting bolt pattern while the 2.8 only has 6. There's no good way to change a 6-hole flywheel to accommodate 8 holes without creating a lot of issues for yourself. To complicate matters further, the 8 bolt holes used in the 3800 cranks/flywheels are not evenly spaced - GM did this so the flywheel or flexplate could only be installed one way correctly (because of the external counter balance weight on the flywheel needing to be in a certain position in relation to crank position).
