Looking to go faster. Wanted to rebuild my duke. Still might, but the only reason I wanted to was because I like having a 4 cyl instead of a big v6 or v8. The hp gains from the duke with the limits in redline vs the cost of swapping in another 4 cyl are making me consider just doing a swap. I have been doing a lot of research on the Quad 4 vs Ecotec swap, and the Ecotec is pretty inexpensive and plentiful and physically it would be around as hard as the quad 4 swap... but the computer issues with the Ecotec seem to be overwhelming. I like how oldschool the fiero is, super simple and I want to keep it looking stock until you open the engine bay, and I have heard you can't use the stock gauges with the Ecotec. Also the ecotec has the antitheft built in and has direct injection... I have not done either swap though so I don't know how bad the ecotec swap actually is, especially cost wise being a student. Also the stock Quad 4 HO puts out a lot more HP than the ecotec does stock, and I would probably not want to turbocharge or anything like that. If I could find a quad 4 HO getting like 190 hp, I would be thrilled with that in my car. they seem pretty rare though, I did a search on ebay for the cars that have those engines and got virtually nothing back.
Im just looking for advice on a way to make my fiero faster, and I don't have a ton of money, maybe 1500-2000 dollars. I do not want a heavy engine in the back, And I do not want the programming issues to be terrible. I am competent at wiring so I'm not worried about that, but I don't want some hidden ignition in my glove compartment like I have seen on many ecotec swaps.
So right now in my head I am thinking the Quad 4 is my best fit for what I want
as far as i know there are NO 190hp quads 4s. youll prolly only get a 175ish one from a late model cavalier/sunfire z24/gt (00-02) after those years they all went ecotec. i wouldnt do anything pre 00 especially the 95 cavalier it was known to be crap. you should be looking for the 2.4 twin cam and actually gm sold a supercharger for it.

checking with car-part.com the quad 4 (eighth letter T - (does that mean twin cam?)) motor from 2001 sells for a LOT more than an ecotec. how does the weight compare between the quad 4 and the ecotec? jon

The 190 hp quad 4 was a factory option on some Olds Acheivas IIRC, I can't remember the year or model though. 180 hp Quad's came out of 1990-1993 Beretta GTZ's with the 5-speed manual. A 170 hp Quad could be found in the 1994 Beretta Z26 with the 5-speed manual; automatics had the 3.1 multiport V6. Cavalier Z24's in 1995 had a 2.3 Twincam with 155 HP, from 96-2001 they had a 2.4 Twincam with 155 HP. These were lower output than the earlier Quad's because they had a lower redline due to balance shafts.
Lower output Quad's could be found in some W-body's in the late 80's, early 90's. I know the grand prix had it as an option. Note I am NOT talking about the single-cam Quad, which was a terrible engine.

Quad 4 is a heavier engine because its an iron block. Not sure how much though. Ecotecs are all aluminum blocks.

I've just begun the process of swapping the Quad 4/5-speed out of my '92 GTZ into my '87 Fiero Coupe. I have the cradle out of the Fiero, but I'm still driving my Beretta. I've done a lot of research on this swap in the last 6 months and I can't wait to get it finished and step on the gas. My GTZ was given to me in 2008 with a blown head gasket and 142,000 miles on it. I put a new head/head gasket on it and the car now has 208,000 miles on it. I LOVE the Quad 4, but the Beretta's body is being eaten up by rust, so it's time to find a new home for it, and the Fiero will be perfect.
