My fuel door release broke and in turn i had to brake the fuel door to put gas in. anyone know what the common cause is for a broken release is it the cable or the lever that brakes most of the time? Just wondering where i should start to look.

My fuel door has been intermittently working for quite some time now. I'm pretty sure it was like that when i got it. Seems to be more so in the hinge mechanism rather than the cable. If you open the door and pull the release you can see the cable pulling the latch all the way. If the hinge is old and your gas door sags or wiggles excessively, i would say that its just worn from age. I haven't gotten around to taking it out to get a closer look but maybe someone else with more experience with this can help you out.

It didnt wiggle it worked great till one day just decided it didnt want to work any longer. Pull the lever inside and the release doesnt move at all anymore. So its down to either the cable is broke or the handle inside the car where the cable attaches is broken. I broke the door my self when the other part broke and I needed to put gas in to get to work.

Sounds to me like you have the right idea of the problem. I would start at the gas side bc you can see that the door hinge can be taken out.

It's the LATCH. there are 2 little "fingers" that the cable slips into, 1 usually breaks, so the door will not release. the whole thing is as big as your fingernail. it can be replaced without removing the door.

My bet is on the latch. One screw holds the bottom and the top has a lip that fits in a slot in the housing. The latch has a "snap" lid that covers the cable mount - a small screwdriver will pop it open.

For future troubles you can slide a credit card in there instead of breaking it open. Suggested by our owner's manual.
