Eliminate the muffler and put in a T at the cradle notch. Build the T like this

It works well and is not restrictive. Hope this helps.

I did the same as above. I made it all moslty myself with the exception of a few bends and flares made by a local muffler guy. I put a short glasspack where the cat was. I think I have $30 tied up in the whole exhaust.

Still looking for ideas when i drop the engine. Any 2 into one couplings i can just buy rather than have to make them? What a bout a good muffler. I want a nice low rumble and when i crack it i want loud.

The CAT and the crossover pipe are the most restrictive elements in the Fiero exhaust not the muffler. You won't gain much or anything at all by removing the muffler. You will gain lots of noise though.

You need to run a glasspack ,,this will help prevent tickets and has a great sound..
..if you want more power ,use a turbo muffler,, most are quiet tho.
the best location for the glass pack is in the stock location,,for the most power ALWAYS mount the muffler or glasspack as close to the exhaust end as possible..
..A glass pack hurts performance because they disrupt air flow ,, where as a turbo is designed to assist air flow ..
...Traffic tickets normally cure the desire for loud pipes, followed by loss of driver license

The 2.8 V6 has plenty of power ,,of course you want a 500 horse power aluminum block Small block chevy V8,,They are the hot setup for driving in heavy traffic..
..Make the best of what you have,, get every thing working correctly,, when you read the forum it is only normal to want a tricked out Fiero.. Many of the Fiero,s you see on the forum took years to build ,IT TAKES TIME!!! a lot of work..
..Get the clutch and brakes in A1 working order,,so you can appreciate your Fiero ,,then one step at a time
..My present car bears little resemblance to the Fiero I purchased 2 years ago
right now I am at war with the headlights ..I did a first rate exhaust manifold porting job and this made a big difference in performance....
...when I see a really sharp Fiero ,or a major modification,,I appreciate what that person had to go thru to reach his goals,,""Keep the faith''

A "nice rumble" is a good thing to shoot for as long as it doesn't turn into a "nice headache" Remove the muffler and see how you like the noise before making up the straight pipe. You'd be surprised how loud the 2.8L can be without any muffling what so ever.
IMO you are setting yourself up for a possible citation for illegal equipment and excessive noise. You'll also never get through inspection with a straight pipe but its your call!

We only have smog in cali. A muffler is not a requirement. I have herd a fiero with no muffler and it sounded like a old truck with dual exhaust going down a hill *pop pop pop pop RRRRRR pop pop pop*. I want a muffler (i think i do )

I think I like the stock muffler sound better than any other setup on a 2.8 that I have heard. - Maybe get yourself a Flowmaster 40 series with the 1 in / 2 out setup - it will fit in the stock location and will give you more rumble than the stock muffler. I have 3 Fiero's - a stock Formula, an 88 with a 4.9 and an 86 with a 350. The 4.9 has dual turbo mufflers and the 86/sbc has 2 into one glasspack. The 4.9 is a little loud but it does sound good. The 86 sounds like crap and will be changed shortly. Each is fun in it's own way but I prefer to drive the all stock Formula - it's tuned right, it sounds right and it drives great - I get a lot more enjoyment out of the Formula and I drive it everyday! As said above - get everything working correctly and enjoy the car. Pick up a spare Fiero to build something from your dreams - have the best of both worlds!

My Fiero with stock exhaust, except for ported manifolds, burbles/pops on deceleration... My suggestion, if you want it to burble, look more at getting a modifed PROM for your car.

Mine does it, but it runs an AFR of around 18:1 on decel.

Lean enough to misfire, but rich enough to have fuel collect in the exhaust and occasionally pop.

DYNO TEST !! Google
""mustang50magazine.com muffler comparison test""
""Titantalk.com flow chart for a few mufflers""

these comparison dyno test will give you a good Idea of the power gains from turbo mufflers,,the test are run on V8 engines ,,you have to guess which will benefit you at a lower RPM..
your engine is going to develope power at 4000 to 5000 rpm..
For many years I used the glass pack because I like the sound going thru the gears and "thought" it produced more power! WRONG...
I Q test are bias to the literate !! crap..

antuzzi I'm glad you asked this. I made a straight pipe freeflow muffler delete for my 88 Coupe.
here are some pictures
not including the brand new GM tips I scored last year for cheap I spent under $20 to make it.
I bought 2 90 degree 2" pipes, one 2" straight pipe from Orielly's (their's are longer than autozone).
I cut the 90 degree pipes from the centers of the narrow openings in a stright line till they split. I welded the 2 together VUELA!!! home made y pipe.

it has absulutely no raspiness to i at all. it actually acts as a toner/resonator. right now I have a catalytic convertor and that pipe on my Iron Duke 88 Coupe, it's great!!
next up will be to do my 87 GT Fastback 5-speed I just got. then remove the cat and put a glasspack in place.

if you wat help of for me to make you one I'd be more than will to help you figure it out or answer questions.

I agree totally with "uhlanstan" on this. I swapped out my cat with a straight pipe a few years ago on my 1st GT and ended up replacing it with a glasspack after I got pulled over for excessive noise. The glasspack gave the car a nice low rumble. I've done the same thing to every Fiero I've had since.
