When giving advice I tend to caution even more and go with the manual.

As for the manuals, they tell you to pull the motor to pull the camshaft to replace the cam gear, but if there is a threaded hole in the end of the cam, it can be done another way.

Now I never did this on a Fiero yet, but I had an 86 Grand am with the 2.5 and the gears were noisy as he!!. Remove stuff in the way on front of motor, remove balancer, remove timing cover, pry on gear to break the fiber part off, cut groove in metal center of cam gear that is left on the cam with a dremel near the keyway, smack with chisle to split, slide off, align new gear, 3/8 16 bolt and washers with a nut to press back on, reassemble. Four hours or less, done.
