Alright guys, I really need your help on this one. I've had this problem for about a month but it didn't get bad until this afternoon. Any time I stop, coast, turn or decel my car makes some sort of moaning/howling noise. It isn't incredibly loud but it sounds like it is coming from the center/passenger side of the car. It gets louder when I press the brake harder. It now will continue to make the noise for a second or two after I come to a complete stop. My dad walked alongside the car while I was slowly driving it. He said the noise can barely be heard outside and is much, much louder inside. He said it got a little louder when I drove with the hood open.
At first I thought it might be the vacuum line going to the brake booster. I capped the line at the intake manifold and it still made the noise.
I really need help with this. I'm out of ideas and this car is my daily driver.
Thanks, Tim.

Thats obvious. Its clearly an invisible person with horrible back problems. It comes from the passenger seat, and it gets louder with sudden movements?

I bet it's something in the clutch or transmission spinning down or maybe clutch is dragging just a little bit. When you come to a complete stop can you immediately shift to reverse without any grinding of the reverse gear (before the "couple of seconds" of moaning expires).

I'll try that tomorrow but I seriously doubt that is it. I'm sure it is coming from the front of the car. But hey, I've seen stranger things.

During all of those instances, your engine is slowing down and being quieter. My money is on your fuel pump. It is louder inside and almost inaudible outside. Might be on its way south.

I guess that is possible. It is an AC Delco pump that was installed in April. Now that I think about it, the pump makes a lot of sense. I'm down to around 1/4 tank which might explain why it got louder after driving today.

I had a new fuel pump replaced 2 times to eliminate the noise, but it didn't do any good. I think a lot of replacement parts just aren't very well made. b
It's fixed! Well, kinda. It ended up being my fuel pump. I filled the tank and the noise went away. I put in 8.4 gallons and I usually don't put in more than 7. I'll drop the tank and take a look when the weather improves a little bit. The inside of this tank was pretty nasty when I put it in last spring. The sock might be plugged and causing the pump to starve when the fuel sloshes around.
I'll try to keep it over 1/2 tank for the time being. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

I can hear the agonizing painful noises anytime I let it get down less than a quarter tank, when I stop to reverse into my driveway or hard turns. usually the day before payday, pump starving for fuel.

I think mine is a combination of low fuel and a dirty sock. The tank was kinda dirty on the inside when I put it in. I found out that the pump has a 12 month warranty so I can return it if nothing else looks to be the problem.

buy a new tank..... it will save you the hassle of having to pull it again to put a new pump in. im on my second pump.. first one was an airtex.... fierostore p.o.s lasted 13 months... without crud in the tank. now i put in an ac delco pump part no. EP 376 its the 88 fiero pump or 87 vette pump. two little tangs on the bottom that need to be filed down and the mount is different shaped on the bottom... but it all works fine. super quiet and never runs out of fuel.
I spent 2 months looking for a decent tank. This was the best I could do. Very few people are willing to ship tanks and a rust free tank in Michigan is pretty rare.
