i went to the junk yard today and there is an 84 fiero out there with a 4 spd transmition in it, i looked at the front wheel well and no sticker to identify what transmition it is. are there any physical apearance or markings to tell if its the MY8 or the M19? im thinking of getting it any way but would be nice to know what im getting. i did get the 2.5L duke out of this car and i think it was from an 85 or newer because it had roller lifters in it but not sure.

Thanks
Steven

Externally they're the same. You can determine which gear ratios you have by counting the turns of the output shaft for each turn of the input shaft while knowing what gear it's in.

You can also tell just by the model & what options are on it. The MY8 came on the very basic model, so there will be no real options (no cruise, tilt, power windows, etc.). If it is an SE or sport coupe then it will have the M19. Since only 7099 MY8's were built, odds are pretty good the one you're looking at is the M19

well i did look at the inside and most of it was taken out, the body apeard to have been repainted so no identifying marks, i could pull the vin and see if it comes up somewhere on the net or if someone knows the vin decode information. i did see power mirors but that was it. didnt see power locks, door panels have been removed.

if its an MY8, the 5th digit in the VIN will be "E"..thats not ALWAYS the case though....

also.. if the tranny has a white decal on it with a bar code, there will be a part number on it with letters and numbers, if "NA or "DJ" are in the part number, then its an MY8. if it is "UM" or "DW", then its an M19...

Wanted to point something out from past experience...I've now gotten 2 "Econo" 4spds from junkyards where the vin code was E and it was a base model coupe, but both turned out to be 4.10's instead of 3.32's. Obviously I wasn't happy either time. I met a mechanic about 3 months after the second incident and mentioned what had happened. He told me he worked at a GM dealer back in the day, and personally replaced several MY8's with M19's because the customers were not ahppy with the acceleration that the MY8 provided as opposed to the 4.10, which accelerated quickly even with a Duke.
