I am planning on shortening the height on my auto shifter like some have on this forum. I know that it's completely for looks, but I am going to put a different shift knob and it will look a lot better lower. I need to know how to remove the shifter rod part because I plan on going to the junkyard tomorrow to get one for my project. What tools are required to remove it? Can it be removed without removing the console skeleton?

The console skeleton can just be smashed out of the way. Four bolts hold the shifter down. One clip holds the cable on.

I wouldn't smash the skeleton away then.

You also need to disconnect a small cable that runs forward to the steering column. That's the cable that prevents you from removing the key unless the shifter is in PARK.

Why are you going to buy another? All you have to do decide how much you want off, Take a old towel or rag and wrap it around the shifter boot. See how far the plastic rod sticks out the top of the shifter. Take a hacksaw and cut the shifter handle off to the desired length. Cut the plastic rod so it sticks out the same length. A couple of pics

When I originally had the automatic, I cut the auto stifter in my Indy in place as well. I just removed the shifter surround and covered the radio and center console up first. I also got a Corvette leather wrapped knob - much more compact than the stock T-handle and better looking than Cavalier/Grand AM ones. (swapped Indy over to a 5-speed last fall).
