I was just reading another thread about overheating and burping the coolant system seems to be a real problem.
I suggest you buy a radiator funnel such as pictured below.

It comes with an assortment of adapters which allow you to lock it in place of a radiator cap, fill it with fluid and then plug it with the t shaped stopper with the long handle.
I raised the rear of my car and filled the system with coolant from the thermostat cap until coolant ran out of the radiator cap in the front and the closed the radiator cap. I then continued filling from the thermostat cap until it would accept no more. I installed the radiator funnel on the housing and filled it half full with coolant. My thermostat has the small hole drilled in it for air relief. I started the car. While it was running I would pull the plug out of the funnel periodically. Air would bubble up into the funnel and coolant would flow into the engine. I did this until no more coolant would be accepted.
If you run it long enough the coolant will expand into the funnel when you remove the plug. At that point I shut off the engine and let it cool while doing other things and then repeated the process.
After it would accept no more coolant I removed the funnel and installed the cap. I have had no trouble since. This is on my 388 V8 installation using Archies radiator and an electric water pump.
The funnels are sold at many auto parts stores and Snap On. I found them in red or yellow and bought mine from eBay Motors for the cheapest price by searching for radiator funnel.
Just a thought for those with trouble burping.
