Hey all,

I got my replacement PCV valve from the Fiero Store today, i went over to install it based on the DIY manual , but i'm kinda stumped. From what i could understand in the manual you remove the plug from the valve cover PCV grommet, and remove that from the hose, and the PCV Valve should be behind this in the hose yes? But i can't seem to see any PCV vavle, anyone have shots of thiers, or perhaps can give me some insight into this?

Dankes!

The PCV valve should be right on top of the valve cover. From there the hose takes a 90 degree bend and runs horizontally over the intake manifold at about level with the TBI.

In this picture, it is just below the oil filler cap: http://media.motortopia.com...12JPG_Thumbnail1.jpg

Pull the elbow out of the valve cover, then pull the elbow off the hose. Should be right there. Is it missing?

the valve should go in the hose. Mine is kinda 'lumpy' right there before it links up with the elbow.

the directions suggested i put oil on the PCV vavle where it enters the hose, what type of oil should I use for this? also should the valve actually connect to the elbow or should it be pushed far enough into the tube that the elbow fits into the tube for support and not the vavle ?

The PCV valve should be vertical, not horizontal. The PCV valve should fit into a rubber fitting in the valve cover and the 90 degree elbow attached to the top of the PCV. Don't worry about oil, but if you want, just use a little motor oil.

wait so you're saying the PCV vavle should have one end in the PCV grommet come straight up from the valve cover , and one end in the plastic elbow ? It was my understanding it went it horizontal before the elbow ? ahh im confused :| anyone have a picture of what it would normally look like ?

The PCV valve was "moved around" from year to year. 84/85 had the PCV valve mounted horizontally in the line.
In 85 it was down near the throttle body. I think later years had it directly off the valve cover mounted vertically.

You will need to replace grommet/elbow/hoses to change your original PCV location to vertical off the valve cover.
Here's the diagram from the P22 book for 84/85 stock setup. PCV is #84

That's why I asked "what year" - it makes a difference because Pontiac made year-to-year changes on LOTS of things.
Part of the reason why you have to look things up.

The P22 book is VERY handy in this regard.

Just checked all 5 shop manuals 84-88, and scanned the images. The 84-86 duke has the PCV valve mounted horizontally. The 87 is also mounted horizontally, in a different location. The 88 duke and 85-88 V6, however, have the PCV mounted vertically, in the valve cover.

84-86 duke:

I believe my 87 duke had the pcv in a vertical position... that diagram looks wrong (it isn't the first time GM used a generic diagram. Anyone have an 87 they can look at?

If those pictures are correct than it would suggest my car is an 87, which its not... unless someone who owned this before me changed some hoses

Could be one of the manual mistakes, like the power steering sensor in the 84 manual, or the generic distributor in that section.

Maybe the engine was swapped. This is why posting a picture of what you have is always a good idea.
