I never heard of an air gap on an AC compressor. Could you explain what it is?
I replaced the compressor on my 88 coupe, but it had a V5 compressor, not the HR6.

Air gap is space between clutch hub and pulley. 4 seasons says the gap should be .015 -.025
or you could burn your clutch and void warrenty. Your V5 has same specification,my hr6
is .039 right out of the box.

An online search shows that this air gap is usually adjusted with spacers or shims. My guess is that the Helms manual (factory service manual) shows how to do it.

I would say that it's the manufacturer's responsibility to get that right. Take it back and get another one. If you can't find one that's in spec, either use one as-is or tell them about it.

Correct. The A/C compressor uses a magnetic clutch, and the gap is just the separation between the two steel clutch plates when the clutch is not energized. Too little gap and the clutch may drag and wear when it's not energized. Too much gap and it may not engage at all when it is energized. A flat feeler gauge is all that you need to measure the gap.

I agree, provided that you bought a complete compressor assembly with the clutch and pulley already installed. If you bought a bare compressor, without clutch, then the GM/Helm FSM is your best guide; specialized tools are required.

Thank you guys for the replies,I have a 86gt service manual but they're a little vague on how to do it.
I got the tools on loan from O'REILLY I'm waiting for spanner to hold clutch plate. As far as taking it
back goes, it's a special order so the store will not take it back unless it's defective. What i need to know is does
the clutch plate get pushed down or does the hub come up to get right tolerarance? In the information
that comes with the compressor it tells you to adjust for your application.
The compressor was complete from 4 seasons # 58255.

As it applies to the air gap --- yes the manufacture sets the gap, however, that compressor may have traveled half way across the world in a container, then been packaged buy the various distributors who source the parts for their part stores, then been sent from the distributor to the parts store and finially into your hands! Chances are pretty good it may be bumped, dropped or shaken somewhere between China and your garage. It just makes sense to check the gap / put in the proper oil and even spin the unit with a spanner wrench prior to installing it. Three to five minutes of check and prep is better than hours of being pissed.
PS --- Four Seasons has a GREAT on line catalog / resourse site -- www.smpcorp.com -- just go to catalog / temperature control / four seasons / enter your part # under parts search and then enter attributes and your compressor specs to include the correct air gap will be listed! Site also has FREE training vids
Oh --- I use to be a four seasons rep for a major parts distributor
