Hey everyone. Ive had problems with my starter for what seems like a while now. Sometimes it will crank very slowly...almost like the battery is dead, but eventually will start running. What happened today though was entirely different. I turned the key, and the car didn't even crank, but the tach did twitch. Tried again, same thing, no crank, tach twitched. I sat there for a moment and was wondering If Id have to get out and try to push start it. I tried one more time, and finnaly it cranked and started. This has happened to me maybe two times before....just happens randomly. What could be wrong here?

deadspot in the starter. Pull it if you can and look at it. Maybe replacing the Solenoid will help. Do you have a Fleet Farm nearby? They sell a GM starter Relay for 16 bucks that bolts right on and is better than OE quality. I used one on my 2.5 and it cranks nicely.

they also sell alternator rebuild kits but i havent checked to see if theres one for the Fiero

is this completely random - or within 30 minutes of driving the car?
if completely random - yes - likely bad starter.
if it is within 30 mins of driving - it maybe a heat soak problem. hot starter/cables/battery choke off some of the amp flow. especially bad (greened copper) battery cables.

also - does the starter ever crank "just fine"?

Check for acid on the battery cable contacts.Allso make sure the starter cable nut didnt come loose, and check the cable down there for corosion.Make sure you have a good battery ground on the engine block. If your battery is more than 5 years old, then it might be on its way out.Other than that, then yes I would say its your starter.
