Is there supposed to be insulation in the engine compartment on the side closest to the trunk? Other sides have it and it would explain why my eggs are pre-cooked by the time I get home from shopping. If so, any suggestions for replacing it?

I pulled out all of my insulation. But I think you can get some from Autozone or other car parts stores in your area and replace it. Get the self adheasive ones.

My two Fieros did not have insulation on the forward wall of the trunk. My 86GT gets warm but it does not quite cook the eggs. On my 88 project car, the cat between the trunk and engine was getting the trunk hot enough to sizzle eggs so I installed some heat shield insulation and have yet to run the engine to see if it helps as much as I hope it will.

Yes and no. They did not cover the trunk side facing the engine with insulation. However there should be a heat shield on the lower portion and they did have an insulating pad under the trunk carpet on the inside but only on the lower portion. If one or the other is missing, the trunk will get hotter. Although the stock trunk with all the proper shields and insulation does get pretty warm. You can always add insulation under the carpet if you want. The stick-on Dyna-Liner would be the way to go. It's thin enough to not make the carpet not fit correctly, it can be fitted to cover the entire engine side wall of the trunk, and does an excellent job of insulating. I actually used the stuff on my decklid. The engine compartment stays cooler and it quiets some of the engine noise.

Having the Exhaust system Ceramic Coated helps as well. I had mine done on my 4.9 swap and it was cooler then the stock 4cyl under the rear decklid. It might be a little overboard for that but I was doing a swap and had easy access to all the parts something to concider.

Pull the factory heat shield off of the engine side of the trunk wall, install a layer of the reflective self adhesive heat barrier to the area, clean and paint the heatshield with high temp ceramic silver paint and reinstall the heatshield.

Pulled the carpet and, surprise, no insulation behind it. Another gift from the fly-by-night body shop that repaired some rear damage on the car well before I bought her. Dyna-Liner time for sure. Always wanted to experiment with some.

When I installed my long tube headers, it was a major heat increase. 12' of flame pipe if you follow. I fabricated heat shields out of stainless steel and used the same material to make 1" stand-offs. I used header wrap sheets to cover the back of the heat shields and it did the job front and back.
There is heat shield for trunk.... If someone remove the shield then trunk will get hotter than normal. See P22 for your engine/year.
