Bought a new alternator for my 87GT, and like a moron I bought the alternator for the 2.8, completely forgetting about the engine swap. I assume the old alternator I have is from the 3.4L/Camaro/whatever... am I right? I just need to know what to tell them at the parts counter so i get the right alternator this time around.

New, wrong alternator:

Old, correct alternator:

If you need any other images please let me know. I'm on my way to work and just threw these together in a hurry.

If your wiring harness is setup for the CS130 alternator (i.e. the one in your second photo), then ask for an '88 Fiero V6 alternator.

I asked for an 86 v6 alt with AC. I need the 4 pin connector on the top.

Well, I went back to get a new one today and ran into some issues. Advance Auto did not have the 4-pin available for any year Fiero. I had to use a 92 Camaro in the parts search in order to get the correct alternator.

If you are up to the task, the CS130 (2nd photo, 4-wire) is a superior design to the old SI and you should upgrade to it. It is very common in 87-93 cars but has different clock orientations. The best one for Fiero was a 105-amp in '87 Corvette. It's clocked correctly but you need to tap threads in the lower boss (the one for the adjuster in the Fiero's bracket). It also comes with a textured pulley that is less inclined to slip.

A 92 Camaro (3.1, 5.0, or 5.7) should have the mounting points 120 degrees apart, which will NOT work in a Fiero. Fiero needs an alternator with mounting points 180 degrees apart, like your old one. Ask for an alternator for an 88 Fiero V6. If they don't have it, go somewhere else. Pretty sure Auto Zone just has a POS Valuecraft alt. I got an AC Delco from Rock Auto, and a Bosch from a local parts place.

You CAN also clean up the front case with the mounting tabs on it from your old alternator, and swap it onto another CS130 type.

Yeah, the Camaro one didn't work. Why I didn't pick up on that when at the parts store I don't know, but whatever. I just returned it and went to the local electronics specialty shop. Ended up with an AC Delco 105A CS130 for $78. The CHinese one from Advance Auto was $95 plus the core.
