does anyone know what the voltage is for the alternator to become excited and to start producing electricity?

as i understand it is that voltage is passed from the dash light, thru the car, to the alternator and then the alternator will begin pumping out the power.

Im tinkering with an old engine on a stand and i might be on t oa cheap safe upgrade to avoid the stupis bulb is out battery dead thing...

Which alt?

Not just volt... Need some resistance in excit circuit. And some wiring diagram shows Diode too...
I forget what resistance...
Just use a new 194 bulb and it easy.

I have seen resistance numbers from 33 ohm to 400 ohm. I used a cheap 330 ohm with good results. Others have put a 33 to 330 ohm in parallel to a light (if the light blows, the Alt will still charge).

Good numbers.

Think in terms of field current, not voltage. It takes very little field current (probably less than 1/10 amp) for the alternator to bootstrap itself into operation. The CS130 alternators don't even use the lamp circuit for field current.

bypass?

Use a "one wire" alt or use a resistor if you won't use a light.

Make sure the Resistor can handle the wattage....
