I'm replacing my 4 spd shifter assembly with another one that I cleaned up and painted.
Does the console skeleton have to come out or is there enough wiggle room to get the assembly out and the new one in?

I'm going to start on it right away so I may answer my own ? before returning back here, but I will check anyway.

Thanks

Spoon

I replaced mine without pulling the console apart.

Your pulling my leg, right? Could you give me a little detail, although I've reached the point of pulling the skeleton already.

If I remember correctly I had to remove as much as I could from the shifter, there is a brace on the back side that comes off and the shift handle comes off.
It wasn't fun but it came out, it was a long time ago and I don't have the car anymore or I would take some pictures.

If you do have to remove the plastic skeleton take it slow as they break really easy.

Okay so you disected it in place.

Well I did pull the skeleton which means radio, etc,,,,,
While I had the skeleton out I figured I may as well replace it. I picked one up at the bone yard a few years ago. Like brand new with no cracks or splits whatsoever. I could tell while I was removing it that the screws had never been touched before.

I installed the shifter and new skeleton this evening. Got dark out so I'll put the radio in tomorrow and clean up the tools.

Thanks for the tips.
