Anyone put one of the later model 3800 in ? Are the ECM reprogrammed? Harder to swap these newer engines than say the Series II?

The newer 3800's are a lot cheaper than the old ones. Wonder why? Any thoughts are welcome!

I am running the L26 engine but with a '99 L67 throttle body, '98 PCM and programing. Its an option if you find a good deal. There really isn't much difference, The oil pan is different and the front engine mount bracket is different. The fuel rail is a return less style but looks really nice. If you stay with the series III computer you are going to need figure out the drive by wire system on the TB.

So you are using the L67 throttle body on a normally aspirated 3800?

Wonder if I will have to fabricate engine mount brackets or if someone makes them..

I don't think the motor mounts are different than the previous generation 3800s, and they've been made a million timers over. If I were going to do a 3800, I would do the 05+ L26 probably. But I would keep the electronic throttle, and new ECM too. You can do it either way though.

My Series III SC engine (2006 GTP) utilizes a N* TB with adapter plate and eliminates the drive by wire feature for simplicity. It also has a Series II PCM for control and a returnless fuel system set up.

My series 3 is topped with series 2 intake and TB and will use series 2 controls. Motor mounts were a piece of cake.

You would need a series2 fuel pressure regulator to use a series2 pcm.

Folks:

My Series III L32 is a 2006 Grand Prix with a bunch of mods and is attached to a built 2004 tap shift tramsmission. Drive by wire worksfine though we have not yet defeated traction control which will not allow instant throttle opening off the line. We are working on this. The original non tapshift PCM/BCM/Key workes fine once we figured out the correct relearn for the VATs.

The tap shift computer issues have been a royal pain, though I am not quite sure why. It may have gotten fixed last night as the TEC 2 rep was at WCF until at least 8:00 PM. Added, nope they worked till 9:00 PM and no start.

Next is cruise control and a good location for the tap shift buttons although I do not expect to use tap shift much.

Regards,

David
