Just picked up a 1988 Fiero GT in factory yellow for nothing, just had to haul out of guy's yard by end of day. It is missing the engine, was pulled in the past where-abouts unknown. My question is, will a V6 from other years work? Do i need to use an engine cradle from an 1988 model? Any help or advise would be great, going to fix this up for my daughter's first car.

Any L44 V6 Fiero engine will work. Since you have no motor whatsoever in the car, this would be a good time to upgrade to the 3.4L V6, which can be made to look from the outside almost completely OEM stock to the original 2.8L. Search the forum a bit and you'll find many threads on people running this setup.

The '88 cradle is specific to the '88 model year. I'm confused though, is your cradle missing?

The 3.4L engine from a 1993-1995 Camaro or Firebird is a great candidate IF you had an original 2.8L to use for swap parts. You might not want to buy 2 engines just to get one good engine though. What is your engine budget?

I have all the top parts for a 2.8 if you go the 3.4 route. Let me know.
The 3.4 is a nice upgrade.
