I've noticed that my 87 3.4 has been hard to start lately (i.e. starter turning slowly or excessively on occasion.) Today, while trying to start the car, I noticed the ground wire coming from the negative battery terminal to the frame (just below the positive side of the battery) was smoking and hot to the touch.
Also, I installed a new starter just last week to resolve a problem where the stater wouldn't engage at all once the car ran for a while. Sitting up for 20-30 minutes to let it cool off usually solved the problem. However, today the car did the same thing even with the new starter installed. I noticed there's no heat shield protecting the starter from the exhaust heat.
(1) What is causing the ground wire to heat up?
(2) is there any way to protect the starter from the high heat "no start" problem? Does that "starter heat wrap" stuff actually work? I
