Today I finally pulled my car out of the garage for a maiden voyage. It did ok for a first trip but, it seems like my throttle cable is kind of flaky. Its like it has slack in the cable before it actually starts turning the throttle body mechanism. It is currently connected to the bracket in the intake plenum and the cable looks like it should just go over the pin on the throttle body with a clip which is how I have it now. I can stand beside the car and work the throttle but it is loose before it starts pulling????? Another thing that is not right is it incredibly hard to get in reverse. I have no idea how to adjust this if its just a cable adjustment. When I pulled the cables off the trans I marked the linkage so I could put it back in the same spot. I have no idea if the PO had the same problem. All other gears seem just fine. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Does this help?

Cable comes from under the shaft and up through the hoop and slides onto the pin with a clip to hold it in place.

Make sure that the cable is riding in the groove on the plastic cable guide!

Well that looks the same as mine I think.

Second is kind of blurry but that is the bottom pin on the throttle body linkage.

Look right to you cuz I can't understand how it has the slack in the cable unless its stratched or something?? I noticed my cable looks different than yours too. More like the criuse cable in your pic. My car doesnt have cruise.

Something on yours does not look right - 1st pic looks like the cable is not seated or centered in the groove. The other is that the cable goes on the top pin! That could be why you have slack. I'll go take a pic of one that is working. I just noticed that the pic I posted is disconnected.....Thanks Hulki for pointing out my short comings......LMAO at that one.....!

I just saw Hulki's post and realized that your cable isn't hooked up. I thought the one on the bottom was the throttle and thats where I have my cable mounted is this not right.

Thanks Pat & Hulki. Works much better now! All that stuff was disconnected when I got the car so I guessed (wrong I might add). Plusses for both of you. Any idea on the reverse problem too?

Seeing as how I did not see a TV cable in your pictures of your throttle body, I am going to assume you have a manual trans. You could possibly need to adjust your shifter cables.

Not real sure about the reverse issue. First thing I would do is to look at the shifter - take the cover off. Sometimes coins and things like to get jammed up in the shifter. There is a way - a procedure for adjusting the cables but I am not familiar with it. Do you have a repair manual? I believe that the procedure is outlind in the Haynes manual too! Someone will jump in here that knows what to do. Good luck.

Yes i have a Haynes manual and I printed off a copy of the service manual (all 1300 pages of it!) Damn thing is hard to find what your looking for most of the time and I have yet to find a binder big enough to hold it all. I will check the Haynes manuel first and see what it says. It is a manual trans I dont think I have anyting in the shifter cuz I had the whole console apart when I was working on the interior. Never even thought of that though. Could it have anything to do with it being a short shifter? I am not familiar with these cars still and it really through me off to have reverse all the way left and forward to begin with. I'm used to reverse being all the way right and down. Again thanks for the help guys. Sorry I didn't do a search and this was probbaly already in there somewhere. Hope you guys read my thread I posted yesterday. Still along way to go though.

OK.... 4 spd. I believe that part fd the procedure to adjust the shifter is to put it into reverse and there is a drill bit invilved. I'll see if I can dig it up. The short shifter may be part of - if nt the problem. Is it a cut apart rewelded original lever or something like Rodney's? If it's home made, I'd look at the bottom and see if it is binding or hitting something. I just made one for myself and had some issues with clearance's - it was for a 5 speed but it was still hitting in a few places making it hard to select gears.
