So after sitting in a rainstorm for about 4 hours today, the brake lights on my 84 stopped working. At first the tail (dim) lights stayed on, even when I turned the lights off and the brake lights didn't come on at all. A couple hours later the brake (bright) lights came on and now won't turn off. When I press the brake pedal, the brake lights turn off momentarily then come back on. When I pull back on the pedal, the brake lights turn off. I can hear the relays clicking behind my shoulder every time the lights turn on or off. The flashers and turn signals work perfectly, as do the parking/driving lights and headlights.
So, as my battery slowly drains, I will be trying to fix the lights and checking back here for suggestions.
Thanks guys, this forum is awesome.

Its possible the relays got waterlogged. If I remember the 84 taillight relays have steel covers and could rust through allowing water in. Since water is directed down the firewall That would be my first guess.

I got it. Turns out the plastic rod inside the pedal switch had melted a little from the electricity going through the switch? Anyways I rotated the rod 90 degrees and it works perfect. I will probably get a new switch so that it doesn't rotate back though. Thanks a lot.
