Are you talking about swapping in a different ECM like the 1227730? Many of us have done that swap.

If you just want to remove the ECM it's simple. 4 nuts and 2 electrical connectors. Takes 10 minutes tops.

I've done an engine swap to a carburetted SBC, so I don't need the ECM and have removed it.

Some information, including the 86 and 88 Fiero factory service manuals:

http://www.fieronews.net/fusion/downloads.php

The service manuals have electrical schematics for the entire car, including any connections to the ECM.

As far as I know, most of the gauges use mechanical sending units... Fuel, oil, speedo, etc.

Maybe not? I'm not totally sure and there are probably some variances.

When I ran a carb on my SBC, the ecm was completely removed.

All the stock guages run independent of the ECM and do not need it for them to run. The 2 exceptions to this are the "shift" and "Check Engine" lights that are triggered via the ecm.

If you have an Automatic, you will need to use a pressure switch (or some other means) to lock up the torque converter.

The AC cystem will work just fine during normal opporation, but the ECM has a built in function to disable A/C at WOT if it happened to be on (avoids the power loss of AC at WOT). If you wanted to retain this fucntion you will need to wire up some other type switch (maybe based on engine vacuum).

Actually no, they are all electric, and don't run through the ECM.
