I am fairly new to the fiero scene. i have a problem that i would like to run by you fiero pros.
Subject: 1986 fiero 2.8 auto
it starts good, i pull out of the drive way and drive for a 1/2 mile and when i stop it dies. i hold the gas pedal to the floor and it will start but, i have to feather it to keep it running, then once i get it going it's ok for a short while and then starts it all over again. i have replaced all parts in the distributor, replaced fuel pump, new plugs, wires and coil test good.

also, i have changed the fuel pump, removed all gas and replaced with new gas.

Jumper the AB on aldl connector and see if there are any codes when it dies.
Possibilities: MAP, CTS, IAT.
You can check the CTS and IAT with a meter to see if the resistance is close for the temp of the engine or air.

I'm not one for throwing parts at things but it really sounds like your coil or ign module. Your coil may test good while cold but when it warms up it fails- a common problem with these cars.

Im thinking ignition module (the pickup is usualley replaced at the same time and involves removeing the distributor).Possibley a bad battery ground, try looking at your battery cables for acid corosion. If your alternater went up and died, your check engine light might come on.Your battery charge gage should read about half way,if it is way low or way high, you would most likeley have a bad alternator (that can be tested at the auto parts store).

If you still have the same problem, check the wire that goes between the coil and distributor. I have had some strange no start issues because that wire has broke two separate times.

My first thought was fuel filter or a dying pump.

A blocked tank breather can also cause this sort of problem but I doubt our leaky old cars have that problem!

Check for a bad injector. Had that happen 2 or 3 times!

ok, the new coil made a world of difference. even though my old coil tested positive it was doing
just what Phil said it was doing. Thank you Phil.

there was a couple other post that was very helpful. these fieros are in a world of thier own, but you gotta lovem. i only wish i started messing with them sooner. i look forward to many postings and reading the forums, thanks to the really knowledgeable fiero techs that jump right in for the rescue. i am going to call you the "Fiero Calvary".
