Did it once just to keep my tail lights on to get home without a ticket. Quickly took it out and never did it again, I imagine it cant be good....

It won't damage anything to use a lower rating but using a higher rated one can.

What you did was the safe way to get home... putting a lower rated fuse in the panel than what was originally there. Like phonedawgs said, the worst that can happen if you do what you did is blow the fuse again. One the other hand, if you replace the fuse with one that's rated higher than original, you risk overheating the wires or the faulty electrical component on that circuit. If the wire overheats, it can easily lead to a car fire if it burns through where there are other flammable materials.

Like others have said, at best it'll do just what its designed to do... At worst, it'll expire prematurely.

If you went the other way, it'd be a good idea to check all your wiring in case you burned something out.
