so today i decided to change the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. after all was said and done i fired up the car. After a while the check engine light came on but it seemed to run ok. I took it out for a little drive and it started off ok. In fact, it was running way better then before. Then the car starts reving itself up and down. Its like i punch the pedal and let go but its doing that over and over again. It usually does it to 3k or so. The car seems like its possessed. What can be the issue here?

Get used to it my friend. It's one of those things that the four bangers do.

um...no i beg to differ. The idle was not far from perfect before but this is just nuts. Its literally like someone slams on the gas pedal and takes it off again. It will go from 900rpm to 3300rpm in 1/2 a second and keep on doing that over and over again. And like i said, the check engine light is on now too.

A properly running 4 cylinder will have a rock-solid idle right around 1000 RPM (some variation on what each individual might see, because the tach's not that accurate, and varies car to car)

Did you find out why the check engine light was on?

Did you read the codes?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRoSMhEL3Ms

If the trouble seems to not happen when the engine is cold but comes on when it starts getting warm try unplugging the O2 connector. That will force the engine to run in OPEN LOOP. This would only to help diagose the problem.

Read the codes as that may tell you what is wrong. Often I forget to connect the vacuum line to the MAP or the line on the air filter for the Thermal air system and get a high idle. Maybe something like that or you bumped against a connector while doing the work.

Check the vacuum hose and the green connector on the MAP sensor.

Code 33. Once you fix MAP, you will probably find the other problem magically goes away.

Yes. You can purchase it by the foot at a parts store. Either use vaccum line, or efi fuel line if you have to. Don't use standard hose or carb fuel line. They will collapse.
