I have changed some lifters a pushrod and a rocker.
Just put everything together, and realised I should have waited and noted the position of the intake and exhaust valves...
How can I tell when cyl #1 is at TDC for firing so I can adjust the distributor right.

(I know there was a thread about this but... cant find it :-( )

If you have everything together and the valves are working some you can just remove the #1 plug and put your finger over the hole while turning the engine and fell which stroke pushes air out. that will be the compression stroke and you can set for TDC.
If the valves are not working then you will have to watch which stroke the rockers are level on #1.

Checking your damper ring has not slipped

Valves are working, thanks I'll put my finger in the hole and feel for compression.

While you have 1 finger in the hole grab the spark plug wire with other hand and squeeze it tight. Then get somebody to bump the starter. You'll be the 1st to know when TDC comes.

If it is together, look at the harmonic balancer and timing marks for second reference.

Starting up just fine, Got the timing right thanks to your tip with the compression cycle.
10 degrees with terminal a and b shorted.
Ran the engine between 2000-3000 rpm in half an our to break in the mating surfaces.
The sound from the valve train is just fantastic now with correct valve lash and new intake lifters.
As always the best help comes from this forum.
Thanks !
