Two years ago I decided to replace the door glass on my '86 GT to finish off the restoration and got quotes from three different places... no biggie... $125 each everywhere I went. Bought them, no problems. So here we are two years later, and I figured I'd call the same places to get some quotes for new door glass for the F355 kit I'm building (the old ones were thoroughly scratched from dirty dew wipes).
Not so easy this time. I just spent two agonizing weeks searching and waiting for six companies to call back. After prodding and poking they all had the same answer... only one door glass left in Canada (driver's door), and one of each left in the US. The one in Canada was going to cost between $160 to $220 depending on the shop, and if I wanted the passenger door glass from the States, it would be anywhere from $280 to $398!!!! So either we're about to have another one of our precious little car's parts become obsolete, or the Canadian glass shops (Apple, Future, Glass Chek, Peck's, plus several independent's) are all in it together and pulling my leg to get me to pay premium prices. In the end, one of the independent shops was able to find me a pair for $145 each from the States, but he said they too were the last known ones.
So if you're in the market for new door glass, unless you have a confirmed set available to you, I wouldn't trash your old ones. Heck, I wouldn't trash them regardless... you never know when they'll turn into gold.

During the summer time, when my Fiero was "new" to me, I was talking to someone in my car while he was outside leaning on my driver side window. I cringed heavily but didn't have the heart to say anything but knew if he broke it I'd be in a world of banana's.
So this is good to know...

Yep, my project car looks like some kids were shooting at the drivers side door glass with a BB gun as there are numerous large chips in it. The only good glass I know of is in my daily driver. I think I will have to swap them out if I want good glass all around in my project car.

Here in the U.S, there is a website that I use for glass. You are correct about shipping...it is expensive. The windshield for my 87GT was $120.00 if I pick it up from warehouse close to me. The side windows are $125.00 each.

They are only required to make spare parts for cars 7 years old or newer by estimating how many will need replaced. After 7 years old, your on your own. There are companies around that will make any glass for any vehicle, no matter the year...but be ready to pay. I had a chipped compound curved windshield on a 60 Lincoln and they said they could make one for $1000 (1980 dollars). I lived with the chip.

Thanks Whodeanie, but I just bought "the last two" continent-wide(?)... well, apart from your secret stash. Cptsnoopy might be interested though.
Ghostwalker: I actually called the company and they said they only have one driver's door glass left and no passenger door glass... so if you need one... don't wait long!

does anyone know if this lack of availablitly applies to the windshield too? I'm gonna have to replace mine before I can cert. my car this spring. also the passenger and drivers windows are pretty rough. can I use the windows and windshield from any fiero for my 87GT? or does it have to be from another GT?
The windshield glass can be found anywhere... and it's cheap. Here in Canada I just bought one for $160. I'm 99.9% sure that all the windshields are the same, although I do remember seeing a listing somewhere a long time ago that listed the '88 windshield separately from the others. It probably had something more to do with tinting than shape though.

I've never enquired about the back glass... nothing ever seems to go wrong with them since they're in a well protected area (unless you're changing your decklid hinges!). If you need a new rear window the best source is probably going to be the bone yard since it'll be cheap and likely in excellent condition. I've never taken one out though so I'm not sure how easy that is.

Used glass can be found at www.kickhill.com Bob, when he dismantles cars saves all the parts and should have decent used windows. In 2004 AC sr came to Florida and some creep tossed a rock through the rear window of his Indy Pace car. It took a while but he did get the glass replaced once he got back to NY.
