The Fiero headlight assemblies were re-designed for the 87' and 88' models. I'm unable to find any references (pictures, diagrams or otherwise) that show the differences between the original headlight assemblies (84'-86') and the re-designed assemblies (87'-88'). I assume just the motor/gearbox within the assembly was re-designed and that the mechanical geometry of the system was retained, is that the case? If not what are the differences? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The easiest way to tell the difference is to look at the knobs. The early motors have large, flat round knobs, while the later motors have small cone-shaped knobs.

The mounting points and arm geometry are basically identical.

The early headlights use relays for control. The later ones use an electronic controller that is much simpler, but more expensive if you have to replace it. I do not know the detail differences in the motors.

The 84-86's used limit switches and the 78-88's used a relay module that senses the load on the motor.

I've found the newer style on some TransAms, Firebirds and on one model Buick. The relay box is under the left front fender on the Fiero and the Buick. Some of the Pontiacs are under the fender and I know one of them was located out in the open near the Brake booster.
I've been told that the wiring is so close to the same that you can use the existing harness and splice color for color, but I've always used the Fiero's newer harness. (Some of my junk yard Fiero finds were missing the motors but still had the harness).
If you do go the 87-88 Fiero/Firebird/TransAm/Buick route you need one of the mounting bolts that is a different length and the motors work on the opposite sides.

The only difference is in the motor design. The buckets, mechanicals and mounts are all basically identical, There are some differences in the lift arm pivots. Some have a pin with a clip and some are riveted. I have used 86 buckets/assemblies on an 88 with 88 motors and 88 buckets/assemblies on an 86 with 86 motors. Gen 1 motors (84-86) can be found in Fierbirds from 82 to 86. Gen 2's from 87 and up.
