The Muncie 4-speed GM installed behind the 2.8s is different from all other FWD Muncies. First gear is stronger, and is 3.31:1 instead of 3.53:1. Second is also stronger, and is 1.9500:1 instead of 1.95454:1, and the case is ribbed, adding much-needed strength. This was the choice of one owner of a supercharged SBC fiero, who broke several Getrags. But that was before the F40.

Once you reach 250ft lbs of torque you go into the unknown zome with Getrags or Muncies. I got this info from a GM engineer that worked for the Muncie divison. If they are in top shape, they may hold at 300 FT lbs for a while but when you regularly exceed the design limits of any tranmission it will eventually blow apart as many have.
If you want rock solid reliability go with a GM 4 speed auto. If you can't live with that or find the auto boring to drive; if you must have a stick, then just drive conservatively and keep the WOT runs to a minimum.

I am using a 4-spd muncie with my V-8. The V-8 is rated at 355hp and 405 ft/lbs of torque. On a chassis dyno I am putting 309 hp and 349 ft/lbs to the wheels.
Been running it since 2004 without a problem. It's been on the track (drag strip and road courses) without any issues. Personally, I wouldn't push much more torque than I have now thru it without mods. (cryo, custom gear set, etc.)

Or don't listen to people who don't know what they're talking about and drive it like you stole it except don't do any burnouts.

LOL

I have a 84 4.10 that I've beat on for 4 yrs behind a "souped up" 3.4 DOHC with no problems it puts out at least the same if not more torque than a stock 3800 sc with no problems. The key to its longevity? Not doing burnouts
