Both of the driver side deck lid bolts are strippep

Aside of "retap the holes to the next higher bolt size", is there a way I can remove and change them for good used ones without destroying the lid?

I'm assuming you mean the threaded holes in the decklid, not the bolts themselves. If that's the case, and you've tried without success running a tap through the holes to salvage the nut threads, then one alternative is to use nutserts. If you're not familiar with what a nutsert is, it's a threaded steel or aluminum sleeve that is set in the hole you want repaired after it's been drilled out larger. Then using a special tool, one part of the sleeve is pulled into the other part effectively expanding it tightly into the hole. They're not the best solution as they sometimes tend not to expand enough to hold tightly and can spin in the hole, but this is certainly the easiest solution since you only need access to the outside of the panel.

If you remove the deck lid and cut a hole in the front of the lid you can take the piece of steel out that the bolts go thru. It is like a piece of angle iron. Thin steel. You have to drill out the rivets that hold in the piece of steel. Weld in nuts and reinstall the piece of steel into the deck lid. Patch the hole. It is towards the front and hard to see.

At that point, you'd do better to just replace the deck lid.

I can't remember what the underside of the decklid looks like on a fastback, but could you drill holes in the decklid, on the opposite side and put a nut on the bolt? This would look clean and you could even put a cover on the holes.

This is my plan "B" if I can not find a damaged deck lid with good nuts in it

The deck lid has two different L-shaped support bolt holders... the LH side CANNOT be removed by cutting a hole in the top as mentionned by Rodney...due to it's shape it cannot be pulled through the top... a large opening has to be done. (Left hand side of picture) ... the RH side can be removed from the cut in the top it does not have a humped shape.

Danyel,

It seems I will have to go with the larger bolts solution.

This will complicate the installation of my rear decklid strut kit, but I believe it is one of the other pleasure of owning a 21 years old car.

Unfortunately you destroyed your deck lid to demonstrate that. But unless the 85 has a special setup, we all learned something here.

Thanks for your help
