Hi all those SBC fiero conversion owners ! I bought a fiero with V8 SBC already installed, but have some cooling problems, so engine is all the time hot.. Other problem is that exhaust system is completely rusted and I want to install something different. Would be very nice to see some solutions what have you done Regards, Janis
Would be nice to have this topic discussed and maybe someone will post good information and pic.
Once again thank You for this excellent forum which brings together all fiero enthusiasts! Janis

fieroguru..How quiet are your exhaust systems?? The V8 Fiero is awfully loud and I need it to be made quieter. What was the cost of the exhaust systems??
If you're concerned about emissions, you can replace the mufflers shown in fieroguru's dual system with universal cats, which muffle the sound about 80%, then add glasspack tips. That's what I did on my SBC kit and the sound level is easily tolerable. I also chose to go with 3-way cats ($100 ea) and A.I.R pump since that's what the L98 engine needed back then to pass emissions (and it passed with flying colors). I used 2.5" mandrel bent elbows from Hedman and pieced it together for the best fit. The SBC would benefit from a cross-over pipe and/or possibly by mating the two sides like in fieroguru's second set of pictures, but the added complication of a cross-over would normally require you to cut into your trunk for the space necessary to place it correctly.
My pictures are scanned in from the mid 90's so they're not as clear as fieroguru's, but they may help you visualize the routing.

The dual setup was much quieter than the single, but I never got a sound clip for it. Here is the sound clip for the single exhaust:
They both were in the $100 to $150 range for the mufflers and mandrel bends and I fabbed them up myself.

If you are wanting a really quiet SBC, you are probably best off to start with these turbo manifolds and run the exhaust in the stock fiero format with the cat up front and the muffler in the rear. This will greatly increase the overall exhaust length and help quiet it down (hard to do with 5 feet of exhaust length).

It also helps to quiet the exhaust if you populate those two collector flanges with turbos...

I don't know how much of a sound difference headers vs. manifolds (or semi-manifolds, like those Vette and turbo ones), but I've got headers and cats on mine, the exhaust run identically to how it's pictured with Fieroguru, and tips with bafflers, and it's still very loud and has alot of droning (in my case, it seems like the cats reduce about eight percent of the noise, instead of Bloozberry's 80!). My exhaust is rusted up pretty good too, so I'm planning on having it redone and trying to fit some mufflers in there someplace.
I've read that getting 'rubber donut' exhaust mounts and playing with how far the tips project past and/or away from the bumper has a big effect on reducing droning, so you may want to keep that in mind when you get yours redone.

I have a very similar set-up to FieroGuru's on my V8, but I have 2.5" ramhorns and a Dynomax Ultraflow muffler, 3" in with dual 2.5" out, its a straight-thru glasspak design but it really knocks the sound down at idle and lower speeds, almost to much but my nieghbours probably prefer it compared to the flowmaster I had before. I did have to cut-out the trunk bottom to fit it though, but my golf clubs still fit ok, so thats fine.

I run the headers that Fieroguru shows in a previous post. In fact, I have installed those stainless turbo mufflers on three V8 installations to date and they are very nice pieces. Go to my web site at www.v8-fiero.us and take a look at the overall build. I ran them forward and into a Spintech dual 2.5 and a 3 in single outlet. They exit under the passenger door. The sound is very nice, not too loud and still reasonable under WOT. I will try to post a sound clip shortly on my web site.

Why not contact V8b Archie and ask him. He's done 100's of V8 swaps and should be able to tell you which way to go.

Body kit or photoshop? The while area below the windshield seems strange. Looking thru the windshield it looks like it has a custom dash in it at least as well. Shades on the Plasma?

I had to cut just a small notch at the bottom LH corner of the trunk to clear the pipe exiting to the rear, but that's because the 308 body kit places the exhaust tips closer together. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't need any changes on a Fiero with stock exhaust location. Certainly no forward trunk wall mods are necessary.
