Howdy,

Starting to replace and clean up some parts to fix my surging problem when coasting at slow speeds and figured I'd start with the O2 sensor.

So, without doing any reading on which brand to get, I went to Autozone and was given a Bosch sensor for the car. I think, alright, at least it's new. Well, after some reading a little while ago, I should be taking it back for another brand.

Anyways, I install the sensor and start her up and play with the throttle a little at the engine to see if it blows up or what not. After about a minute, I start to see white smoke emit from around the sensor. Since it's so dark out already it's getting hard to see where it's actually coming from with a measly flash light but it appeared to come from the sensor itself.

Is this where the answer simply becomes "Bosch" and I get AC Delco or something comparable? Was something done wrong? Should I wait it out? There was some silver paste around the threads for installation so I'm wondering if that's what's burning?

I'll take some pics soon. Otherwise, I'm installing the original one for now and see what happens.

Thanks in advance

did you use a grease packet, seems like they come with those, it could just be burning off the exhaust pipe

Mine was already greased up, no packet. :\

I removed the sensor and saw some of the silver grease was on the tip of the piece that gets screwed into the exhaust. It was easily removable so I stuck it back in and same smoke. It's a bit daunting as it's smoking quite a bit... specially when everything starts to get real hot.

I'm contemplating waiting it out and see what happens.

Reinstalled the new sensor, ran it for about 15 minutes eyeballing it with hose nearby ( ) and near the end the smoke was beginning to taper off a little bit.

And here I thought I could change out an O2 sensor and tell myself I was doing rather good... sheesh.

I'm pretty sure thats just the anti-seize burning off. I used quite a bit when I put my exhaust back on my 2.8 and it smoked quite a bit till it all burned off. Afterwards, no smoke so meh.

Meh indeed!

I exerted my frustration into tightening the sensor down, seeing if it'd go any further, and sure enough, it tightened down at a molecular level unknown to man and it no longer smokes.

Now, with that said, along with the surging (which'll be tomorrows screw up), I have white smoke casually come out of the exhaust as if it were 15 F outside. What I'm thinking is, since there was a slight gap in the sensor, that white smoke was coming out from the opening and leaving me believe the sensor was going belly up on me.

Ah well, hopefully I can get to and from work tomorrow without any complaints.

Thanks for those that commented.

Could be the anti-seize burning off or it could also just be that there is a metal presevitive on the sensor housing o keep it from rusting in the package. Either way let it run for a while and it should burn off.......
