It was my 88 GT for a lot of great years, and it's been my son's for 10 years or so too. He drives it summer and winter here in Minnesota. Had 221,000 miles last time I looked and doesn't use oil. But it's had long term on and off problems with conking on the expressway, and then often not starting till the engine hass cooled and it is good and ready. It's an automatic and on it's third transmission a few years ago.

Been in the shop all but 10 days for the last two months, so it may finally be near the end of the line. It did start up in the morning when it couldn't be started and was left in the gas station the night before. Didn't make even a click, and moving the gear shift lever or steering wheel or key back and forth doesn't do anything when he tried to start it.

Our mechanic is a good one with our other cars and we've had a number of things replaced over the years, and quite a few in the last couple months. The car has always started right up and run well for him each time he starts it, in the weeks he has kept it lately

We've always just driven our red one for fun and we don't know anything about the mechanical side of the car. I know some of you own several or many Fieros Does this conking sound like anything that you have dealt with frequently? Any suggestions as to anything else we should try with our GT before it gets replaced?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Ingnition module, pickup coil, ignition coil or the distributor.. Check for computer error codes... With that many mile the electronics may be weak.

Had similar problems with my 88GT last year. Replaced ignition module and it seemed to help.

Try replacing the wiring/connectors from the
ignition coil to the ignition module. I've seen these
go bad and give a multitude of problems. The
Fiero Store sells new ones.

Welcome to the forum.

Next time if starter doen't click and is drawing power on gauge, give it a couple of hits with a hammer. If it doesn't click and does not draw power, look at trans switch. Starting problems when hot can also include bad battery, cables, connections and possibley heat soak too.

I'll agree about the ignition module, have it tested at least 3 times 4 is better as they pass when cold but fail when hot. Most folks here will say to use only AC Delco IM as other brands do not last as long and give no warning when they go out. Also check and clean the connectors / wiring to the ignition system for corrosion.

The IM needs to be mounted on a perfectly clean plate, clean screws too as it grounds through the mounting screws, use heat sink compound otherwise you'll fry the IM in no time. If you have not replaced your pick up coil recently and also need a new IM, consider replacing the entire distributor with a reman, the new disign is much much better.

If you're inclined to replace the distributor yourself, this may help,,,,
