I seem to remember it being said that it doesn't matter which coil terminal the plug wires attach to. For example, on the 1-4 coil the #1 plug wire can go to either the #1 or #4 terminal. Is that correct?

Thanks,

As I understand the system, that sounds correct.
The coil is setup to output the spark to the cylinder that is starting the power (bang) stroke and the cylinder that is starting the exhaust (blow) stroke.

Yes, generally speaking, it does not matter, as long as the sparks occur 360 degrees apart.

BUT!
In most cases, with the waste spark system, 1/2 the plugs are fired in the conventional polarity, the other 1/2 are reverse polarity.
I have heard of some engines with modules which switch the polarity of the coil every time they fire, in which case this does not apply.

Polarity has an effect on the longevity of platinum coated spark plugs.
In some engines, 1/2 the spark plugs have platinum coated side electrodes, while the other 1/2 have platinum coated centre electrodes.

In such a case, it is absolutely vital to ensure the plugs are connected to the proper terminal of the secondary!

What engine is this?

Wow! That's complicated. The engine is a 1992 3.4DOHC. I moved the coils to the topside of the motor for clearance and the plug wire relocation is strictly to simplify routing.
