I have to start this story somewhere.

The car is an '86 Fiero GT. Recently it started idling bad and whenever I came to a stop it would stall out or the RPMs would fluxuate. Eventually the distributor on the car gave out on the freeway and we took it to a shop. I assumed that was the cause of my bad idle, a distributor. The shop replaced the distributor, ignition coil, and spark plugs, and the car continued to idle bad. We took it back and had the EGR solenoid replaced, along with the EGR valve and the pipe running from the EGR valve to the intake plenlum, thinking it was a vacuum problem. They replaced all three and the car idled even worse than before.

One of the shop guys decided to work on it in his spare time, and dug into the wiring harness and found a wire that had melted. He replaced the wire and the car ran perfectly, with a solid idle at 800 RPM after she warmed up and it got into closed-loop. The guy told me that the melted wire was the cause of the distributor failing (one of the wires on the distributor would fry) and said we shouldn't have any problem with her. The car drove better than it had in months.
I was driving her home from the shop when she died again and the check engine light came on. Tried starting her but that didn't work either. I'm assuming it is the distributor again, but it's a brand new one. If something is still causing the distributor to fry, what could it be other than the wiring harness?
I have to mention that the car drove perfectly on the way home with no problem at all. When it died I was laughing at how ironic the situation was.

Anybody have any ideas?

Did you pull the SES codes out of the car? They will be a great place to start

Probably should have been one of the first things I asked them. I will do that tomorrow afternoon.
Thank you.
