The car I bought had a trunk leak when purchased. It was definitely moist in there. I repaired the leak, but I still have a nasty smell when I open the trunk. Especially when it gets hot while the engine is running.

Short of replacing the trunk carpet, what can be done? A box of A&H baking soda?

When I got my car, I had the same issue. I removed the carpet, threw the mildewed backing away. I pressure washed the carpet with liquid tide and simple green. I left it in the sun to dry for a couple of days. When I put it back in I used some fiberglass matt insulation in place of the backing that I took off.

Since then I always leave the decklid open when the car is parked in the garage.

No need to replace the trunk carpet, topcat has the right idea for you.

You can use an anti-microbial product such as U.S. Microban QGC antimicrobial to control mold, mildew and odor associated with water damage. This is an EPA registered product that dilutes down for economical use, you can clean hard surfaces as well as the trunk rug too. I sell alot of Microban QGC to the professionals that shop the equipment store I manage, look for a professional carpet cleaning supply store in your area.

The trunk rug is mostly synthetic olefin based, water usually wont hurt it but don't "scrub the heck" out of it, you'll cause nap distortion, air dry over a fence, it'll be dry in a couple of hours.

Any trunk rust?

edit, should nver try to spel before I have first coffee,,,

QGC is one of the very best water remediation products out there for odor and disinfecting, I have used it in my Fiero's hvac system after a little rodent died in there, crawl space musty odor, bathroom pipe burst, mildewed basement.

I have also used a diluted bleach on the trunk carpet to kill odor. It did not seem to change the color. In other aras, I have also used Lysol spray to get the odor out. The key is to let it dry in the sun after washing.

Ozonators work rather well, too, if you have one.
