Racecar cranking power. Summit® lightweight Nippondenso-type Protorque starters offer a 4.0:1 gear-reduction ratio and a whopping 1.9 HP. That's 222 ft.-lbs of racecar cranking power. If that's not enough, there are even more powerful 3.1 HP monsters, which are a pound lighter! They have a 4.44:1 reduction ratio and churn out an awesome 342 ft.-lbs. of torque. Both of these powerhouses are suitable for engines up to 502 c.i.d., and compression ratios of up to 18.0:1. GM versions are adjustable for four mounting positions; Ford types, for 18. A gold dichromate finish prevents corrosion and electrical shorts on both.
Anyone using this starter? My Titon gave up the ghost, I can stop it with my fingers on the bench. I cant find it on Summit and the difference in price is staggering.

The one I posted is $229.95 The Titon replacement is twice that much. I sent Archie an e-mail but its late and I don't want to call him this late. I will give him a call and probably go with what ever he suggests, not something I want to install more than once every 20 years

Yeah Archie, that's the one we discussed on the phone and I decided to try it because it uses the same mounting block - It was a direct swap. The PDF on the Summit link confirms it in the same column as the PWM-9000
Here's a scan of my instructions page 1:
It did crank the LT1 quicker and with less effort.
well I think I figured out what happened. My oil filter relocation kit was leaking out of the bolt holes and onto the starter. I never thought it would get inside of the starter, but I pulled it apart today to see if it was just the brushes and it has oil all inside of it. The brushes look ok and the inside of the starter looks to be in great shape. It just didn't have any power. I will get some break cleaner and WD40 and see if I can clean it up. If it doesn't work I will only be out for the brake cleaner and WD40.
You know what the inside of a 100000 mile valve cover looks like? Thats what the inside of the starter looks like before I cleaned it.

Jake, I had a similar leak in the past and switched the remote filter adapter to this one that seals with o-rings - it also gives more clearance to the starter (good if you're using an auto trans)
If you have the standard Moroso adapter the gasket has also to go around the bolts to seal that area too. If not then oil will go out there. When you build that gasket you can't go to thin there. That will minimize any leak. Then as added measure you add a gob of silicon to the bolts at the bottom before tightening. All has to be very clean for silicon to stick.
I made my own gasket but while the starter is out I will be redoing the adapter. I have done everything to seal these bolts and I think the internal gasket has to be leaking, my oil pressure is anywhere from 40 to 75 PSI Going to be a Fiero weekend I guess.
Fiero2m8 do you have a part number for your adapter?
Back for round 2 after cleaning up the starter and fixing the oil leak I had good luck with it but now the starter is struggling to turn over the engine. I will pull it and see if i can clean it up again but it sounds like it has finally said enough is enough so I will be getting the powermaster 9004 from Jegs as I have a gift certificate that I have to use before it expires.

Will that work with a 70s block? Another $100 would be ok if I knew it would last. I think my starter would still be ok if it wasn't for the oil soaking it got from the oil filter adapter.
