The turn signal stalk is your switch for the wipers, windshield washer and fits into the turn signal switch. It is often found broken and not working.
Just replaced one of these today and it was a five minute job. No the steering column does not need to be opened up in any way. Here's how to do it.
Buy a new stalk or get a good used GM unit. I would stay away from the Chinese made units sold on eBay as they are substandard.
First pull the stalk out of the turn signal switch socket and let it hang loose by the wire. Next disconnect the stalk wire connector at the bottom of the steering column. You can locate it by pulling on the stalk and watching what wires are moving below. Next get a strong piece of stiff unbraided uninsulated thin wire about 2 feet long. Wrap the end of the wire around the stalk wire behind the connector (about 5 wraps) and thread it through the slot in the metal connector end. Now pull the stalk wire with the stalk on it so the guide wire goes up through the steering column. Once it gets the stalk end remove the wire from the old stalk wire and attach it to the new stalk wire in the same way. Now begin to feed the wire on the new stalk into the steering column and pull it through to the other end by pulling on the feed wire. You may have to jiggle the wire a bit back and forth but it will easily go through. As soon as it goes through push the new stalk into the turn signal socket to seat it. Then remove the feed wire and plug the connector back in. Replacing the stalk is very easy IF you know the trick.
Been doing it this way for a while and it always works. Since this old trick is not known by all, I thought that I'd share it with the forum.

A big thanks to, " THE BLACK PARALYZER". Was thinking about getting an intermittent motor and switch to swap for my "3-speed" factory deal. My understanding (from earlier in thread) is that it's pretty straight forward, but I really hate pulling steering wheel. Never thought of or heard of your approach, but it makes perfect sense. Just like fishing a wire through a wall. I love working smart as opposed to hard.

Glad to help Fiero owners everywhere. When you know the tricks it makes it so much easier to do the job. Before I learned this trick I thought that disassembly of the steering column was the way to go. Don't want to see anyone making that mistake.
Some positive kudos for you guys too.
