Hi. I have a 1984 2m4 fiero, and the tranny is pretty much shot. we've (my dad and i) heard that the 4 speed auto can hook up to the 4 cyl, but we were hoping for a 5 speed. is this possible?

well anything is possible. Is it easily achieved, i should ask? hehe. thanks in advance.

What kind of 5 speed auto did you have in mind?

I don't know of any transverse 5 speed (auto) transmissions.

We're not at all sure. Niether my dad nor I are too transmission savvy. We were just hoping for some sort of 5 speed that would easily bolt up.

That would be too cool. I think a bigger issue, would be that a 5-speed auto would most likely be electronically controlled in ways that may not be compatible with the Duke's ECM. But that's just a thought. I'm sure other folks will pipe up.

You'd probably have to look the way of SAAB for a 5-speed auto, no? $$$$

Easiest would be the 4T60, which is a 4-speed automatic. Can't think of any 5-speed automatics. Here's a good read:

Other than the electronics, wouldn't the cadillac 5 or even 6 speed autos bolt up? Might be interesting.

Thanks for the info. we'll probably talk to a specialist in our hometown about it, for the easiest option. i think we'll prob just play it safe with a 4 speed.

Any extra info would be appreciated.

I don't pay much attention to autos so I thought maybe GM had something transverse out there I didn't know about...

But Cadillac uses the Hydra-Matic 5L40-E 5-speed electronically controlled automatic and the Hydra-Matic 6L50-E 6-speed electronically controlled automatic

The "L" means longitudinal. Unless you want to convert your Fiero into a front engine car neither of those transmissions is going to help you much.

Actually while I was sleeping GM does have a new line of Transverse Auto six speeds, the 6T40, 6T45, 6T70 and 6T75.

http://www.autotrends.org/t...ology/transmissions/

Whether or not any would work in a Fiero I have no clue, but soon they may be the only game in town.
