I curently have a '86 2M4, 5 speed. I need new wheels, new paint, and the interior is in pretty bad shape. Well, as my bride syas, I did want a project car, and I got one for sure.
I've found a '87 GT, V6?, no trans or motor for relively cheap. It has decent seats and the interior is in pretty good shape. Oh yeah, the wheels are stock Fiero wheels instead of those ugly plain steel rims I got stuck with.
Questions:
(1) Will the '87 interior swap into my '86? If so, what problems might I encounter? (2) Is the sunroof the same on both models? I think it would be kinda nice to have a spare. (3) Should I swap the headlights? I think '87 is when they changed design wasn't it? (4) What other swaps would be suggested? (5) Am I a complete idiot for wanting to keep my notchie 4-banger when I could for a few hundred dollars more have a fastback V6?
(1) Interior will swap (2) Yes as long as the sun roof is stock (3) Yes IMO its a good Idea but you have to swap the wiring harness from the front of th 87 with it. (4) You can swap the fastback rear clip (5) Yes your crazy, I'd prabably swap the 4cl into the gt before I'de start pulling parts off it.

It will all swap over, the headlight system is different, but can be made to work. I like the Nothcie better then the fastback so I dont think your crazy. Sell all the fastback parts here in the mall to someone who wants to destroy a Notchie.

martyj, I have an 86 coupe with the 2.5 4 cyl engine. I get 38-40 mpg with out the Ac off. About 37mpg with it on. I dont think you are crazy. I prefer the coupe to the fastbacks my self. Good luck Joe Crawford Your next door neighbor in Texas
Yup, I like my '86 notchie more than the fastbacks... Also don't care for the shark-nosed bumpers on the later models myself :P So, not crazy. And, you can sell the fastback parts on here and prolly get most of your money back.
As for the steel wheels being ugly... they actually look pretty nice with some beauty rims on 'em. (My Fiero)

I kinda figured the interior would swap but just wasn't sure. My interior is all warped and ragged. I think it's because the sun roof leaked and the previous owner had let it set outside about like that for several years, never even opening it up to air out. So my thoughts were to buy the '87, swap anything I could, and sell the rest (here). And it's nice to know I'm not the only Notchie-lover.
@ josef644: Wow! 38-40 mpg! I just got mine running recently and it still needs a lot of work. I'm getting less than 30 right now.
@Twilight Fenrir: Hmmm...those are the same wheels I have right now. That don't look too bad at all. I'd better not let my bride see that, I finaly got her convinced that I "need" better wheels.
Got the GT yesterday. My bride says that today is Fiero day for me. *big smile*
The sunroof on the GT has some kind of lever arrangement that I'm not familiar with. I haven't had a good look at it yet, I'm still letting the heater in the garage do it's thing. Is that a better sunroof design? Is it interchangeable with what I currently have? Also contemplating changing the front clip for the pointy thing. Hmmm...

Hmmm...something aint stock then. The sunroof in my '86 2m4 has the little latch at the back that flips forward with the buttons on the sides to release for removal. The sunroof on the '87GT has a rubber seal around the perimeter of the glass and has a latch inside with a lever that swings right to left to raise the back of the glass. I haven't looked real close to see if the glass is detachable. Since I was busy with other aspects of the swap today I didn't pay it a whole heckuva lot of attention. Now I'm curious.
Another question: Will the coolant runners on the GT fit in place of the ones on the 2m4? The ones on the 2m4 have a bad place where someone tore a hole in them trying to loosen the drain plugs. I don't know if the ones for a V6 are different or not.

The sun roof in your 86 is stock, sound like the 87 is not.
I think 87 gt cooling tubes go under the front cross member, 84 to 86 go over the cross member.
If they don't the V-6 cooling tubes are different that L-4 cooling tubes. The front half from under the doors to the radiator might be the same but the rear will be different. The hoses from the engines come out at different angles so the tubes are bent differently, one may also be longer, I think on the L-4 pass side at the rear, could be the drivers side. It's been a while since I've seen one.
