I have 1986 2.8v6 Stock 5speed and everytime i put the car in reverse it grinds gears and have to keep trying it for awhile until it slides into gear... Keep in mind i have the Clutch all the way down when i do this. Another thing i notice is when i left of the clutch an inch or 2 i have to push the gas to start moving... On my friends fiero I tried the same thing and i can let his clutch out all the way near the top then push the gas whats the deal with my fiero..So im thinking the clutch is bad?? or my transmission but im not sure... If it was to be one of them how hard is it for an average joe to do i mean ive done all the work myself in my fiero from researching it from the forum to the internet searches and done really well... Please help! Thanks fiero Forum

Did they put a 5 speed behind a 2.8 in 86 ? Anyway, every clutch will grab differently. Depends on wear on the disk pressure in the pressure plate, and how well the hydraulics are bled. As long as its not dragging when the clutch is pressed, or slipping when its not you should be okay. Reverse is always difficult to get, there are no synchros so the gears need to be in the right position. sometime if you let the clutch out a bit to line up the gears in the trans it will drop right in.

If your clutch were to go it would either rattle if its the throwout bearing, start slipping during acceleration if its worn, or grind and squeal if it came apart and you would go nowhere fast. If your trans goes bad you should know it. grinding, clunking, missing gears, grinding hard into every gear.

put the clutch in and try the first second shift with the car still repetedly and if it grinds alot and or wont go into gear its the clutch then you should bleed your system and then bleed it and did i metion bleeding it? yeah its that important

Reverse has no synchro

The input shaft is still turning from inertia when you go to put it into reverse

Putting it in another gear stops the trans from turning

If you start the car in 1st (which you should be parking it like that anyway) with the clutch depressed, you won't get the grind

or just shift into another gear before reverse

It isn't a symptom of your clutch malfunctioning

That is my response from a previous thread

and your friends car is the one with the problem, your clutch should be engaging close to off the floor, and disengaging near the top when pushing down
