I bought a headlight motor Gen 1 for my 88 fiero with Gen 2 motors. I did install it with only the two wires like the Gen 2 type leaving out the blue wire. The motor worked maybe one time. Now it will only come up half way I have to lift the hood for the headlight to come up and, of course it will not come down on its own unless I turn the manual knob a few times.

The original Gen 2 motor is completely shot and I am trying to work with what I can afford right now. So my question is will the Gen 1 and Gen 2 work? or will I need a new motor?

Jim

I did the same as what you did when I first got my fiero. I don't remember how I wired it, I do remember also leaving the blue wire out. You can either make it go up and then have to turn the nob by hand to make it go down or turn the nob to make it go up and just flip the switch to turn on the headlights and then when you turned them off they would go down.

Just found this.

I would have to manually put them down but sure enough everytime I would turn the headlights on they would go up. I guess If you have the Gen 1 headlight motors and don't wan't to waste any money on Gen 2 headlight motors you could do that.

that's because you didn't wire the blue and gray wires together.
if you do that, they will work correctly

you need to hook up the blue and grey wires to one of the car's wires and then hook up the green to the other car's wire.
if they work backwards of what they should, then just switch which car wires you have them hooked to
i haven't played with the Gen 2 system to remember which wires are hot in the up/down positions.

Hope that helps.

Basically no they will not work or as you found can be made to work only one direction.

Do you know what was wrong with your Gen2 motor? The normal problem with them is the plastic slugs which is an easy fix.

This is basically what my motor is doing right now........

Dodge, the motor was dismantled by the P.O. I think he might have left some parts out I put direct power to the Gen 2 motor and nothing. Anyway what year Trans Am's had the same motor I will likely find one of them in the Junk yard than a 87-88 fiero.

Thanks,

Jim

87 and up Firebird will work. Just remember that the left side Firebird Motor fits the right side of a Fiero and the right side Firebird motor fits the left side of a Fiero.
