I need to know if I can switch all the body panels from an 86gt fastback to an 86 2m6 notchback with no modification. Thanks! Phillip

In a nutshell, yes.

There are several different clips, rivets, and specialty fasteners that will need to be purchased as you will break them when taking the body panels off, and it is not an afternoon job to effect, but the body panels do interchange.

Several of the panels are the same on all models, such as the hood, front roof, and the notchback rear body half. The front fenders are the same unless they have the ground effects panels, same with the doors and the panel in front of the rear wheel well. The noses and rear fascia panels are different, styles being bumper pad, aero and the 87 - 88 coupe (shark - nose). 87 coupe rear fascia is different from the 88 (88 has exhaust ports on both sides, 87 only on drivers side).

With all of this said, unless you are trying to change the color of the car, or go from a non-GFX to the GFX style, or notchback to fastback, there is no need to change every panel.

A note - if you go from non-GFX to GFX panels, the wheelwell liners are different. Another note - the front and rear fascias are different between the ribbed body side moldings and the rounded body side moldings. Early fascias can be made to work with the rounded moldings by careful trimming, I don't know if the opposite is true, however.

Good luck with your project, let us know how you are progressing.

Seriously, it might be easier to swap out drivetrains! The GT has the WS6 suspension, the SE probably does not.

Swap drive trains!! That takes a weekend and little to no $$ output except for fluids.

Do both cars have the same transmission (auto or manual)? Do the drivetrain swap. I can't imagine changing all the panels without damaging the paint. A cradle swap is no biggie.

The only problem with an driveline swap is the 86 gt has a 3800 buick motor that someone put in it and screwed up all the wiring. Phillip

Even with the wiring hassles swap the drivetrain. The harnesses can be changed too. Still a simpler job than changing all the body panels. There is a good chance you may damage that custom paint.

If we were closer, I'd say to bring it to my shop for the transplant.

Not a terrible job in my opinion to swap the panels, especially if you have a hand for the larger ones...however, the roof section is bonded down, so that one takes a chance on damage...
