I have available a 5 speed from a 91 Grand Prix DOHC. My question is would it be better to use the Getrag 284 from the DOHC or stay with the Getrag 282 for my swap.

The 284 is stronger.

But has no provision for rebuild, no kits, or parts available. GM EOLd it (284).

Also, the 284 uses a different clutch slave cylinder arrangement and the shifting linkage is different due to the front engine drive configuration from which it comes. There are minor mounting issues to the cradle, as well.

That being said, the 284 was designed for use with the 3.4 dohc ( Can handle 50 ft-lbs more torque than the 282) and the above issues can be overcome.

In fact, one of the original 3.4 dohc Fiero conversion kits included the modifications for the Getrag 284 (American Custom Engineering.) Unfortunately, it is no longer available.

Mine was bolted up to a 5 speed Isuzu and it was fine. I guess a lot depends upon your style of driving.

I know someone in Florida that has run a 365 hp Corvette engine with the Isuzu for over 10 years and never had any problem with the tranny. He, even, took me for a spirited ride on I-95 that included a screeching take off on the entrance ramp.

I rode in another FL car a couple of years ago that had a modified 3.4 dohc engine connected to an Isuzu. This was the fastest Fiero I've ever rode in and rubber screeched in every gear.
