If you do an engine swap, the PCM will not allow you to start your car without the proper VATS inputs. Since a swap doesn't use the VATs feature it must be shut off in order for the car to start.

From Chris at HP Tuners. (Using the VCM tuning suite editor):
To disable VATS you must do the following:

1. Set the VATS value to "PWM"
2. Set DTC P1626 to "3 - No Error Reported"
3. Set DTC P1629 to "3 - No Error Reported"

If you have problems please email your file to support.

Chris...

I checked my PCM and it appears that the above solution worked but judging from Chris answer this may or may not work on your PCM. In any event it appears that HP is willing to help us obtain the right code to disable the VATs feature.

This is good info to have, if you want to disable it. But, why disable the VATS? Use it as it is intended with a by-pass module. Connect the by-pass module to an alarm. If a thief gets past the alarm, they still will not get past the module, do to the module being turned off.

Just my two cents!

I know it's not a Fiero but my mother has been having problems with her VATS on her Grand AM. At least i think that's what is doing it. Every now and then when she goes to start her car the anti theft light will come on. Then she can't start her car for 10 min. or so. Would you be able to disable it on her vehicle the same way. I mean through the PCM i'm sure the codes and stuff would be different.

Chris: Yeah the VATS can be a PITA and since our discussion on another post, I've been trying to figure out how it can be easily disabled for future swaps. Fortunately for HP Tuners uses, if their suggested solution doesn't work, the company has stepped in and offered to help. My PCM has the changes that they suggested and the VATS is no problem. On older ECMs the VATs can be turned on and off with a switch in the program. On the newer series of GM OBDII PCM"s , coming up with a consistent formula to shut off the VATS seems to be the challenge- works in some cases , doesn't work in others..
